Meditation for PTSD and Overcoming Traumatic Experiences

PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder, is a condition caused by traumatic experiences often seen in veterans, sexual assault victims and people who have been in a serious accident. PTSD is a type of anxiety, always lurking beneath the surface, and causing panic attacks at any time. Living with PTSD can be quite tough, as you are in a constant state of anxiety… always alert and having a difficult time feeling safe and at peace. So how does one overcome PTSD?

Overcoming PTSD

The first thing you should do is to contact your doctor or therapist, as this is not something you can get through alone, and you need all the help and guidance you can get. But if you are looking for some alternative treatment methods, then you may want to try meditation. Meditation is one of the greatest methods for relaxation and for reducing anxiety and stress, and can have a great impact on your mental and physical health when practiced regularly. It is a simple technique that everyone can do at any time, and all it requires is a couple of minutes where you will not be interrupted.

Meditation for PTSD

Many people with PTSD have had great results from practicing meditation, especially mindfulness meditation, though there are some things you need to be aware of. Meditation allows you to become aware of your body and mind, which can be a very overwhelming experience, as you may experience that those past hurtful memories are suddenly surfacing, creating discomfort and anxiety. This is quite normal in the beginning, and that is why it is recommended that you practice meditation with a group and with a specialized teacher, who can help guide you through the meditation and help you whenever you feel overwhelmed.

Make sure to also practice meditation somewhere you feel safe and relaxed. Pick a location you are completely comfortable in, around people you trust, so that nothing is creating unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Here is a guided meditation for PTSD and overcoming past traumas, to help you deal with the pain and anxiety, and help you recreate some balance and stability in your life.
