What is Oil Pulling

Oil pulling, also known as gandusha, is an ancient Ayurveda alternative practice from India used to improve oral and physical health. Its a detoxification method that cleanses your mouth for bacteria and plaque and thereby also improved your overall health. You see, oral health is not limited to the mouth. The bacteria that accumulates in your mouth enters your body and blood stream and can cause complications in your body when released. Good oral health is thereby not only health of the mouth but also health of the body.

Oil pulling is simply the act of pulling oil in between our teeth. We are swishing oil around, just like with mouth wash. This frees up bacteria and loosens plaque, which are the two things that cause cavities and complications. The great thing about oil pulling, as that it is very cheap… all you need is some good quality oil, and you are good to go.

How to Do Oil Pulling

So how does one do oil pulling? Follow these easy steps if you wish to improve your oral hygiene. Do this in the morning before eating and before brushing your teeth. But first you need to find your oil. You can use any oil, but people have had great results from sesame oil and coconut oil.

Step 1 – Swish

Take a tablespoon of your chosen oil and put it in your mouth. Now swish it around just like when you use mouth wash, except you do not want to gurgle, as that can promote gagging. Try titling your head a bit forward, so that the oil does not get too far down your mouth, as that can cause gagging and discomfort. Swish the oil in between your teeth for about 20 minutes. This may seem like a long time, so you may want o start with only 5 minutes and then work your way up as you get used to it. Once your time is up, spit out the oil into your trashcan, and not in the sink.

Step 2 – Cleanse

Take a cup of warm water. You can add a little sea salt if you please. Then wash your mouth with the water to get that oil out.

Step 3 – Brush

Now brush your teeth as you normally would. Repeat this every day or a couple of times per week.
